On January 2nd I put out a call for questions and many of you asked some great ones! Every Wednesday (until I run out of questions), I’ll be answering them here! There may be ones that are related, so I’ll answer multiple questions at once. You can always add a new questions to the queue by posting them as a comment here.
Ebony Morton asks: What is your favorite thing about being a writer?
There are so many awesome things about being a writer, I don’t even know how to start. First off, there’s the employment perks. I work from home, I make my own hours, I’m my own boss (when I’m contracted by a publisher I’m considered an independent contractor). It’s kind of the best thing ever. Sometimes I finish my work before noon and I get to hang out with my nephews or go shopping or take a walk or… well, do laundry, but that’s not the best one.
Secondly, I really like what I do. Writing books is pretty fun (except when it makes me want to rip my hair out). There are times when I’m writing and I look up and two or three hours have gone by and I haven’t even noticed it. That’s just golden time. Sometimes I read a book after I’ve finished it and I think, “Damn, that’s good.” Which is also pretty awesome.
But for me, the best part of being a writer is getting to interact with readers. It’s really cool to meet people who like the books or talk to them online or blogs. I’ve made real friends from bloggers and readers and, of course, other writers. Knowing that something I’ve written has touched a person in any way totally makes the things I DON’T like about being a writer worthwhile.
